Snapshots from Seoul: Hongdae

16 Mar

For our lunch on our last day in Seoul, we ate at a pub (I cannot remember if it was an English or Irish pub) but no, pub grub wasn’t served but Korean fare, of course. I was not certain as to what the name of the ย dish was but it was braised spicy chicken with noodles. I searched on the net about it and I think that it was what we ate. It is called jjimdak.

Hongdae is actually an abbrevation of Hongik University, which is Hongik Daehakgyo in Korean. You can expect this area to have a youthful and artistic vibe. It is also home to artists and known for a mural street. While standing outside a convenience store, I got two flyers about an invitation to some painting exhibit (I think) and a play.

Our group may have not seen everything about Hongdae, for we only explored the area closest to where we had lunch, but I have noticed that there were a lot of shops selling clothes, shoes, stationery, skincare and cosmetics as well as cafes, pubs and PC bangs (PC stand for personal computer and bang is the Korean word for room, so literally it means a PC room or an internet/ gaming cafe) catered to university students, teachers and tourists.

While waiting for our bus, I was able to go to (wherelse… :)) Etude House, The Face Shop, Innisfree, and Watsons. As much as I wanted to shop for more, I was afraid to incur excess baggage fees so I only got a few light items.

After shopping, we just sat/ stood outside a building with the sun’s rays directly shining on us ๐Ÿ™‚ It was still a bit chilly that day.

I just took a few photos of the “Hongdae” scene with students walking about while I ate a Melona (a creamy melon-flavoured popsicle) to douse my fiery tongue from the jjimdak.

I know that there was definitely more to Hongdae from what we have seen but at that time, we did not have the luxury of time to explore further. So from Hongdae, off the airport we went! It was time to go home ๐Ÿ™‚ ย Oh here’s a trivia: The popular KDrama, The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince’s cafe can be found somewhere in Hongdae. And yes, I did not go there ๐Ÿ™‚

Have you been to Hongdae? Care to share amazing places in the area?

Cheers ๐Ÿ™‚

Haul from Seoul: H&M

14 Mar

My shopping haul from H&M in Myeongdong cannot be actually called a “haul” per se because I only got two items.

Anyway, I went to Seoul for a winter trip right? I was in a group tour so shopping was always rushed and worse, came with a time limit. When our tour group was finally in Myeongdong, our guide told us that we can shop the whole of Myeongdong for less than two hours. The shopaholic in me was really tensed as I want to visit as many shops as I can, and of course… buy stuff!

My sister requested me to go to H&M and get her daughter, my niece, some pretty headbands, tights and whatnot. Yes, my 7-month old niece is fashionista like that ๐Ÿ™‚ H&M was the first shop I entered and boy, was it big! The children’s section was in the fourth floor and I had to breeze through the stairs to reach it. Whew! I was sweating in the winter cold with my four-layered clothing plus the heater in H&M was on full blast methinks. Fortunately, the kid’s part of the shop wasn’t really crowded so it was easy for me to navigate around. ย I only got my niece a headband and pair of tights in the whole of H&M. I browsed for probably about two minutes in the women’s section but there was nothing really nice on sale (yeah, I looked for them first) and I was in a hurry.

And since I was in a rush, I flew down the stairs – again – as fast as I could. When I got to the bottommost part of the stairs, I saw the lift in all its glory. Good times, eh?! As much as I wanted to throw tantrums and yell for stupidly not seeing the lift, I couldn’t waste more time so I just searched for the next interesting shop I can see.

Now that I look back, I wished I spent at least another ten minutes in H&M as there is still no H&M here in Bangkok. Oh well, there’s always a next time ๐Ÿ˜‰

Do you love shopping at H&M? Apart from H&M in Myeongdong, the last H&M shopping I did was when I went to London four years ago ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope H&M comes to Bangkok soon.

Cheers! ๐Ÿ™‚

Back from South Korea…

3 Mar

Anyeonghaseyo! I just got back from a short visit to South Korea. Although I was in a group tour, I still had fun, sightseeing, eating, and most of all, shopping! There’s just so much to see there that my four-day trip is NOT AT ALL enough.

I still have a few Korean won left so I know I will be back ๐Ÿ™‚ I especially miss the cold weather, too.

One thing I disliked about group tours is not having a free time to go to places I want to go. We are also compelled to go to places that we don’t like to visit… But I met new people and really maximised our time there…

Pictures of attractions and shopping hauls to follow ๐Ÿ™‚
